MS Dhoni’s test retirement:
Mahendra singh dhoni, the cool captain of the Indian
cricket team announced his retirement from the test cricket on Tuesday. He
started his test career in 2005 and he took the test captaincy in 2008, and
ended up his test cricket captaincy in 2014.In his captaincy; dhoni led the
Indian team to number one position in 2009 for the first time in ICC test
rankings. It’s very difficult for Indian cricketers to defeat Australian
cricketers in a test match but dhoni made it possible. In 2013, under his captaincy, India became the first team in more than
40 years to whitewash Australia in a Test series. In June 2013, when India
defeated England in the final of the Champions Trophy in England, Dhoni became
the first captain to win all the four ICC trophies (Number 1 ranking in Tests,
ODI World cup, Champions trophy and the T20 World Cup). Till now his records
are best among all captains to date.
Key moments in the career of Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-
2005: Dhoni
shot to fame with two brilliant one-day innings -- 148 off 123 balls against
Pakistan and an unbeaten 183 off 145 against Sri Lanka, leading to his
inclusion in the Test team the same year.
2007: Dhoni
was asked to captain India in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa
after senior players like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar declined to play.
He led his young team to a stunning win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final
at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The victory inspired a Twenty20 revolution in
India that led to the creation of the glitzy Indian Premier League in 2008.
2009: Under
Dhoni India assumed the number one ranking in Test cricket, a position they
held till 2011.Dhoni hit an unbeaten century against sri lanka and india won
this test series.
2010: Dhoni
hit an unbeaten 132 against south Africa and India won this test series.
2011: Dhoni
hit the winning six as India won the 50-over World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka
in the final at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. It was India`s second World Cup
title after Kapil Dev`s team achieved the feat in 1983.
2013: Dhoni
made an excellent score of 224 runs against Australia and India won this test
series.
2014: As
India stumbled in overseas Tests, Dhoni`s defensive leadership was slammed by
critics and media alike. The toll of being captain, batsman and wicket-keeper
in all three formats for the past seven years took its toll and Dhoni quit Test
cricket.
What others say:
Mahendra
singh dhoni is true gentleman of the game-Brad Haddin
Left surprised by Mahendra Singh
Dhoni's retirement from Test cricket, Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin on
Thursday said the Indian is a "true gentleman" of the game and has
left his team in a much better position than it was when he took over.
"The great thing about MS Dhoni
was his temperament. No matter where the game was going you wouldn't know. He
had a pretty even tempo through whatever situation was going on and that's why
he's had such longevity in the game," Haddin said.
"I was
very surprised (he retired). He's been a great servant for Indian cricket, the
way he handles himself and the team, the calmness he brings to a very, very big
job in captaining the Indian cricket team. He was great to play against and a
true gentleman of the game. I think he's left Indian cricket in a better place
than it was when he took over."
